Ellesmere

Another stunning cruise from Swanley Bridge Marina, is the 50 mile trip to the beautiful market town of Ellesmere. Taking around 4 nights and travelling through no less than 30 locks, this cruise will take you through some of the best scenery the UK’s canals have to offer.

When in Ellesmere there are plenty of things to see and do. You can take a trip around the mere on a hired boat or on the local steam power launch. The mere itself was formed by a retracting ice age over 10,000 years ago! Whilst on the mere, make sure you keep an eye out for the local wildlife. Herons are in abundance and there is even a specific heron watch centre, giving you a comfortable indoor viewing area.

Ellesmere hosts a number of events each year, from the annual food festival where you can find a large number of stalls over 2 days, selling a variety of hand made and local produce. If you are more of the athletic type then the Ellesmere Triathlon may be the thing for you. The Visit Ellesmere website is a great website to help you plan your trip.

If you’re looking for something to eat or drink in Ellesmere then you won’t be disappointed, there are plenty of pubs, cafe’s, restaurants and sandwich shops. There are also a number of walking routes that pass through Ellesmere, if you would like to go out and explore the best landscapes North Shropshire has to offer.
